Abstract
The study was conducted to investigate the effect of dietary supplementation of reddish clay on the growth performance and immunity in Holstein calves. A total of 8 calves were allocated into 2 feeding groups, control(basal diet) and treatment(basal diet plus 5% Reddish clay). This study was carried out for 60 days. A Basal diet(milk replacer and calf starter) as fed ad libitim during overall periods and the results obtained were as follows : 1. There was no statistical difference in weight gain throughout the experimental period from 4 days to 64 days of age between non-supplemented groups(37.07§¸) and Reddish caly-supplemented groups (36.07§¸). 2. Calf starter together with milk replacer was provided until 34 days of age, and then only calf starter until 64 days of age. Intakes of calf starter greatly increased from 34 days of age to the end of study, however, no statistical differences were found in feed intakes between groups. 3. The proportion of CD2, CD4, surface IgM on the surface of B cell which is responsible for humoral immunity, and N lymphocyte which is related to non-specific immunity were higher in Reddish caly-supplemented groups than in non-supplemented groups.
